On Feb. 1, 2026, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched a cosmic ray balloon to the stratosphere. This wrought iron rose went along for the ride. At the apex of the flight, the metal bloom was 115,823 feet above the Sierra Nevada mountains of central California, touching the edge of space.
This is a premium item. The rose was forged by hand and will never wilt or die. It is made of iron, the element created in supernova explosions--so this rose is genuine "star stuff."
After the balloon exploded (as planned), the payload parachuted back to Earth, landing on the outskirts of Death Valley National Park. The rose had a wild ride, and the students got great data for their cosmic ray monitoring program.
The rose comes with a greeting card showing the iron bloom in flight and telling the story of its journey to the stratosphere and back again.
