Valentine's Day is coming. Looking for a far-out gift? This Crystal Bear Bouquet flew to the stratosphere onboard a cosmic ray research balloon on Jan. 2, 2025.
You can have it for $129.95. The students of Earth to Sky Calculus are selling Valentine's bears from space to support their high-altitude ballooning program. Each one comes with a greeting card showing the item in flight and telling the story of its journey to the edge of space and back again.
At the apex of the flight, it floated 100,059 feet above the Sierra Nevada mountains of central California. After the balloon exploded, as planned, it parachuted back to Earth, landing near the Eureka Dunes on the edge of Death Valley National Park. The bears had a wild ride, and the students got great data for their cosmic ray monitoring program.
