This golden Ring of Power has flown through space over Hobbiton in New Zealand.
In June 2018, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus flew to New Zealand for an unprecedented South Pacific launch of space weather balloons. To help fund their trip, they launched this ring of power to the stratosphere. On the southern winter solstice, June 21st, it flew more than 33 km (108,345 feet) above New Zealand’s north island, passing almost directly above Hobbiton, the movie set for the Lord of the Rings. The ring is made of gold-plated tungsten and inscribed with the authentic Mordor script of the One Ring.
This far-out gift comes with a greeting card showing the ring in flight and telling the story of its journey to the edge of space. Sales support the Earth to Sky Calculus cosmic ray ballooning program and hands-on STEM research.
