This pendant has touched the edge of space. On May 14, 2025, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched it to the stratosphere onboard a cosmic ray research balloon, more than 104,002 feet above California's Sierra Nevada mountains.
The premium Swarovski crystal has a deep ruby hue inspired by the expansion of the Universe--or "redshift" in the love language of astronomy. It is surrounded by a dozen glittering 5A cubic zirconia nuggets in a frame plated with hypoallergenic 18k rose gold. Also, it comes with a photo of the pendant in space for a truly unforgettable presentation.
During the 2.3 hour flight, the pendant experienced temperatures as low as -58 C and air pressures less than 0.09% of sea level. According to onboard radiation sensors, cosmic ray levels were 100 times Earth-normal as the pendant reached the top of our planet’s atmosphere and touched the edge of space. After the balloon exploded (as planned), the payload parachuted back to Earth, landing in the Inyo Mountains near Bishop, CA.
The students are selling space pendants to pay the helium bill for their cosmic ray ballooning program. Each one comes with a greeting card showing the jewelry in flight and telling the story of its trip to the stratosphere and back again.
