For the first time ever, earrings have flown to the edge of space. On July 7, 2025, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched a cosmic ray research balloon to the stratosphere. These Black Mooncat earrings went along for the ride.
Supported by a sterling silver frame, each black cat is curled around a genuine blue moonstone. They floated through the stratosphere for almost 3 hours, while sensors inside the payload gathered radiation data for the students' monitoring program. The flight's peak altitude was 110,555 feet. After the balloon exploded (as planned), the payload parachuted back to Earth, landing in the Inyo Mountains near Bishop, CA.
Each order comes with a greeting card showing the earrings in flight and telling the story of their journey to the stratosphere and back.
