FLOWN ON JULY 20, 2019, THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched a cosmic ray balloon carrying 50 commemorative silver dollars to the stratosphere. The coins touched the edge of space exactly 50 years to the day that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made the first human footprints in the Sea of Tranquillity.
Created by the US Mint, each silver dollar is curved and reproduces the helmet of astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Reflected in Buzz's visor are Neil Armstrong, the United States flag, and the lunar lander. The opposite side of the coin shows Armstrong's iconic footprint on the Moon.
Each coin comes with US Mint certificate of authenticity and a greeting card showing the silver dollar in flight.
