On June 3, 2026, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched this premium pendant into the stratosphere aboard a cosmic-ray research balloon. At the apex of the flight, it floated 100,108 feet above California's Sierra Nevada mountains.
This 18k gold-plated pendant is inscribed with the words: "You are my sunshine." The sunflower's "eye" is a genuine citrine crystal, which sparkles in sunlight even at sea level.
During the 3.0 hour flight, the pendant experienced temperatures as low as -58 C and air pressures less than 0.11% of sea level. According to onboard radiation sensors, cosmic ray levels were 100 times Earth-normal as the pendant reached the top of our planet’s atmosphere and touched the edge of space. After the balloon exploded (as planned), the payload parachuted back to Earth, landing near Green Lake in the Sierra Nevada wilderness.
The students are selling space pendants to pay the helium bill for their cosmic ray ballooning program. Each one comes with a greeting card showing the jewelry in flight and telling the story of its trip to the stratosphere and back again.
